It was Friday night and I was getting beer and food in preparation for a night of musical creation when I ran into my good friend, Jeremy. He asked me what I was doing the following day and while I knew I was going to spend the day filming another video, and I had a couple promising ideas, I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to end up working on. That's when he told me about the Jerk Off. As in beef jerky cook off. Get your mind out of the gutter!
Anyway, after he told me about his plans to hold a beef jerky competition between him and his friends, and that he was cool with me filming it and making a video out of it, I knew that it was going to be a fun time and that I would end up with a very entertaining video.
I didn't know anybody there except for Jeremy, but the great thing about living in the south, is how laid back and hospitable the people are. I mean, sure, there are exceptions to the rule, but southern hospitality is a thing and the people here are really great. I mean, they invited me over, almost nobody knew me, and yet they fed me, showed me a great time, and let me into their home and lives to record it, edit it as I saw fit, and post it on the internet for the world to see. That is amazing, and something I am very grateful for.
So basically, what you didn't see in the video was the six hours it took to cook the jerky, the hours of people drinking, talking, telling stories, and laughing, and all the people eating pounds of dried and seasoned beef. I like to keep my videos sweet for attention span sake and the people who care can come read the blog, but honestly, this was a hard video to edit.
There was so much great footage, it was difficult to narrow it down to just three minutes out of the hours of footage I had recorded. But once I had the song picked out, I just cut to it the best I could and made it short and sweet. The only thing I really regret is not putting more about the eating and judging of the jerky. When it came time to pick a winner, I simply talked to everyone there, and asked them all which jerky they liked the best. The jerky was sorted into different bags, eight in all, and they simply had to remember which number was their favorite. The number eight bag was the winner and Jeff won the Jerk Off 2017 championship belt.
Usually I end up taking the spotlight in my videos, but Jeremy and Jeff were just so entertaining that I let them do the heavy lifting for a change and I just tried to get it all in focus. They were a blast to hang out with and they are naturals when it comes to being hilarious and entertaining.
