In 1997, when I was ten years old, I saw The Fifth Element for the first time. It was an action-comedy and a science fiction film and I absolutely loved it. The story, the cinematography, the cast, the effects -- every single aspect of this film came together and knocked it out of the park.
These days, there are great movies all the time. Especially in the action-sci fi genre. But in the 90's, truly great movies were hard to come by. Let's be honest, the 90's were like the dark ages for movies. Yes, there were some good 90's movies, but there were so many more bad ones.
But in '97, Luc Besson came out of nowhere with one of the best films of that decade, and one of the best science fiction movies of all time. The style of the film, the art direction, the cinematography, all looked so cool and stole from all the right science fiction stories to create an aesthetic that was every sci fi nerd's fantasy. It was like the 90's threw up on Blade Runner and somehow it looked cooler.
Then you had an all-star cast, before many of them were stars. Bruce Willis was the ultimate badass hero of 90's action flicks, so having him in the starring role was pivotal to the film's success in the box office. But you also had superstar level actors, before they were superstars, like Milla Jovovich and Chris Tucker. Could you imagine Resident Evil without Milla, or Rush Hour without Chris Tucker? Hell no! And you couldn't imagine The Fifth Element without the two of them either.
So for me, this movie is a classic, and will always be one of my favorite sci fi movies. Do you like the film? How did you like my remix? Let me know in the comments, and let me know which movie you would like to see me remix next. Thanks for stopping by, and until next time, dominate life!
